We all love Star Trek. Until a holodeck becomes reality, the tricorder is our next best bet to make some cool real-world Trek technology. Well, according to a new study by electrical engineers at Oregon State University, we may be closer than ever before. This is all thanks to ultrawideband technology.
In a research paper entitled “Experimental Characterization of a UWB Channel for Body Area Networks,” which was recently published in the EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking, researchers concluded that this ultrawideband technology can be used at very low energy levels and can support the transmission of vast amounts of health data in real time. This, of course, sounds exactly like a tricorder.

You know us. We love mobile phone integration. Wearable phones. Clothing doodads. You name it. That’s our bread and butter. Cancer, however, is not our bread and butter. It gives us great relief then to announce that a new study has been published nixing the heretofore thought notion that mobile phone usage causes brain cancer.
A scientific journal, Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP), has published an overview of similar studies that casts doubt on any links between cell phones and cancer. The journal has no affiliation with the cell phone industry, should you be foaming at the mouth just waiting to say “conspiracy.”
More on this as it develops, but for now, it seems we can keep gabbing.

Tech keeps getting smaller and smaller, as we all know. However, researches at University of Michigan may taken the tiniest great leap yet. They have designed a one-cubic-millimeter sized computer. Wow, right? As of right now, the researchers are intending it for optical use. You heard that right. They wanna stick it in your eye. Our collective cyborg futures are almost upon us!
This thing stuffs a pressure sensor, memory, thin-film battery, solar cell, wireless radio, and low-power microprocessor all into one very small container. It uses an advanced form of “sleep mode” that is found in cell phone and laptops. It is nearly always asleep unless when needed. This conserves energy because, in case you hadn’t realized, changing batteries in an eyeball can be tricky. Not that that matters, ..read more

Perfect Third Inc’s WakeMate sleep aid wristband won’t be here to kick around much longer, according to sources. It seems the attachable USB charger has a tendency to, well, explode. Yeah you heard that right. The thing explodes.
An e-mail sent out by the company’s CEO states, “we were informed by a customer of a safety incident with the black USB chargers.” Yeah that is vague but let us clear things up. The safety incident? Unchecked explosions.
However, it seems the WakeMate itself is safe and the problem lies strictly with the USB chargers. Look for this item to fly back on shelves with a new charger at some point. Until then, stick with safer sleep aids.

We have posted about the great environmental value Sakku’s Solar Messenger bags have because of the combination of Solar technology and sustainable materials together with the recycling offer for ‘out of fashion’ bags.
Sakku is offering two models, the smaller (13.78 x 9.84 x 4.72 Inches) sakku.worker (black), made from black cordura and the larger (18.5 x 13.78 x 6.3 Inches) sakku.traveller (white), made from used sails from sail boats.
